Transfer of Registration
View official PDF ↗(a)Registration expires on transfer by owner. Whenever the owner of a registered vehicle transfers or assigns her/his title, or interest thereto, the registration of such vehicle shall expire. The owner shall remove the registration plates therefrom and forward the same to the Department of Revenue and Taxation, or may have such plates and the registration number thereon assigned to another vehicle as provided in § 7129(e).
(b)New owner must secure new registration. The transferee may operate and permit the operation of such vehicle upon a highway for ten
(10)days after the transfer of such vehicle without the registration thereof and shall within ten
(10)days after the transfer of such vehicle apply for and obtain the registration thereof, as upon an original registration, except as otherwise provided in
(c)or
(d)below, and except that no registration fee other than a Five Dollars ($5.00) charge for the cost of new plates and new registration certificates, shall be imposed for such registration.
(c)Transfers to dealers. When the transferee of a vehicle is a dealer who holds the same for resale and lawfully operates the same under dealer’s number plates or when the transferee does not drive such vehicle or permit it to be driven upon the highways, such transferee shall not be required to obtain a new registration of such vehicle.
(d)Transfer by operation of law. Whenever the title or interest of an owner in or to a registered vehicle shall pass to another otherwise than by voluntary transfer, the registration shall expire and the vehicle shall not be operated upon the highways unless and until the person entitled to possession of such vehicle shall apply for and obtain the registration thereof.
