Additional Standards for Privies

Every privy shall be fly-proof and rat-proof, adequately vented, and provided with a suitable shelter. Seats shall have a close-fitting cover. Pits shall be of sufficient depth so that when filled the contents may CH. 48 TOILET FACILITIES AND SEWAGE DISPOSAL be covered with a minimum of two

(2)feet of earth. During use, fresh deposits of excreta shall be covered with sufficient earth or lime to exclude flies and prevent odors. Pits shall be closed and sealed when the level of excreta reaches within two

(2)feet of the earth’s surface. A new pit shall be built to replace the old one if other sewage facilities are not available. The Administrator may authorize the proposed location of the new pit and inspect the completed privy prior to use.
